Is it just me or does having an African American character called Dr Midnight seem somehow racist?

No, it's not racist. Check the definition. Also, sometimes "midnight" is just a reference to the fact that it is dark outside at night.
WE GOT MOVIE SIIIIIGN!

As someone else mentioned, there was a black Dr. Midnight in the comics. That Dr. Midnight was a woman though, so you can still complain about that.

He was just there to appease social justice warriors anyway. Dr. Mid-Nite is white in the comics.
Nope. No more than Black Vulcan.
Or Black Manta or other black characters who have the name Black in their superhero name.

In 1942, "midnight" was a racial slur towards African Americans, referring to their dark skin.
A black superhero calling himself "Dr Midnite" during this time period is as likely as a black superhero calling himself "Dr N-Word" or another race-based insult.
In the comics, there was a black Dr Midnite in the 1980s when the slur was less common and arguably a lot less powerful.
It's really, REALLY stupid writing and demonstrates that a show about time travel is being written by people who have no idea about actual history.

You may want to roll some of that back. I know some very racist attitudes exist in asia over darkness. I know personally from a woman I dated once and many friends from China. But your example is innocent viewing of the tooth paste name is actually pretty bad. Many areas like China, Thailand, and such value light skin because darker skin implies manual labor and dirty. There are many ads that play on the color of darker skin being dirty.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Few8kJ0zfnY (this is a remake of a Italian ad that is the inverse of it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fTP14N_Oik (balloon ad is funny when he gets home, but changing him in to the tooth paste is almost like saying in this case dark is ok, so it lost points for me there).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4okNUKMHy1s
Couldn't quickly find the others I have seen, but there is one where they bring a shaman in to cure a woman of black face because it is a "curse"
As for the character I am not sure about the name, if it was a racist term, then it was in bad form, but this show seems to gloss over our history quite often with how both race, sex, and sexuality was treated back in the day. There were always great people that were not small minded in thought and action, but even with that those people often got in trouble for their actions i.e. Mississippi Burning.
100% shipper free thread.

The once No. 1 selling toothpaste in Asia is a brand used to call "Darkie". It is the best selling toothpaste from 1920's until a US senator visiting Taiwan in late 80's. He accidentally saw this toothpaste and immediately decided it is a racism and forced Colgate to rename it "Darlie".
What makes the toothpaste best selling is that Asian people admire the white teeth of black people because of the contrast.
Colgate also changed the person figure on the cover from dark skin to light skin African American. The sale of such toothpaste plunged.

Delicious A Hole; YES! Having the 1 African American actor darker than a brn paper bag, on screen anyway, being named Dr. Mid-nite can seem like an underhanded racial shot. Every other Blk thru-out the D.C. Universe (and Marvel) are of mixed race! And Dr. Mid-Nite is probably a quadroon, @ that!
