When Scarfe got shot during the meeting at the docks, I keep thinking, Scarfe could've prevented that. Like, if he'd taken the gun out of his holster and already had it in his hand when Stokes arrived, the scene would've probably ended with Stokes getting shot instead of Scarfe. See, in the scene, Scarfe does grab for his gun the moment Stokes begins moving towards him, but by the time its out of the holster, Stokes already is engaging him in fisticuffs.
He also could've easily mentioned "Oh, by the way, Internal Affairs is working my butt over. If I go missing, they're gonna know you were behind it." Doesn't strike me that Perez ever warned Stokes that IAB was onto Scarfe, either. Knowing that Scarfe was under investigation would've probably led Stokes to, assuming his pride and rage didn't cloud his judgment, react differently.

I got the feeling Scarfe's life was coming apart from depression and half wanted it to end.
It may have been cocky or it may have been him saying beep it.
Right. Misty mentioned his late son Earl. You know I keep wondering if Earl's death put Scarfe on a downward spiral and that's what caused him to begin working for Stokes.

He could have handled it better, sure. But I thought the whole point was that he got too cocky and greedy. He seriously misread Cottonmouth.
Just like Tone, Chico, and lots more..
It actually wasn't the first time Scarfe got all cocky when talking to Cottonmouth. Remember that scene a few episodes earlier when he's delivering Chico's body to them and selling out Luke? Scarfe helps himself to alcohol from the bar, puts his feet up on the counter, and generally acts disrespectful to Cottonmouth. All this to a man who had just been in the middle of a heated "throw things at each other and scream" argument with Mariah, and who is clearly having a bad day. In fact, he was lucky then that Cottonmouth only called him "Virginia Slim" ("What else do you call a skinny white bitch?") and didn't do something worse like use Scarfe for batting practice.
