The far future could be where Rip ended up. Perhaps this will be where the JSA thread will end up. Gotta remember, Gideon no longer has access to The Vanishing Point, so it would be logical to assume, she can only go by information she already had, or search through historical and news data from the POV of whichever 'present' they currently find themselves. Any altered future beyond their 'now' would conceivably be unknown and unknowable, if it differs from any future Gideon was previously aware of.

They should have had someone turn up in the far future rather than the past. But I guess they want to save things like that for more upcoming episodes

When Rip had activated the 'scatter' thing , I thought we would be spending an episode or two about finding each team member 'whenever' they were, and was surprised to see them actually get them all back in the same episode. This seems like something they may have done had they known they were definitely going to do a larger 23ish episode season.
But if it's anything like the other 13 episode shows I've watched, it seems like a good number to have a decent story be told without a ton of filler and crazy episodes.

Currently it shows on imdb that Legends of Tomorrow season 2 only has 13 episodes, but I am sure just like every other show in USA, after the winter break (it really depends on the ratings) it would get picked up for a full season of 22/23 episodes.
Legends was expected to perform as good as The Flash or Arrow season 1, but it didn't, so I guess they're trying very hard to fix that in season 2.
I, for one, am expecting Legends to be picked up for a full season 2 of 22-23 episodes and renewed for season 3.
The CW is making a conscious decision to take the cable network approach to a few of their shows. iZombie season 1 and 3 both have 13 episodes, season 2 had 19. Rob Thomas talked about it in some interviews here and their. I'm pretty sure they are doing the same thing with LoT. Rob Thomas said he much preferred that over dealing with options for additional episodes because it gives them a chance to write a complete season with precise ending rather than sort-of wrapping things up only to have to extend for more episode orders.
I think it's a smart idea. 13 episodes is perfect for an adventure show that can take a more episode by episode approach rather than a season long arc, which I think works with LoT. Doctor Who does it as well as a lot of other cable shows (Netflix keeps it at 13).

It's better that way.
Honestly, shows with 22-episode seasons tend to drag on longer than they need to.
Less episodes mean more structure in the plot.

I have no doubt Rory disappearing in S1 was about budgets, much like a certain other primary cast member being 'missing' after the first episode of the S2.
I haven't seen 2x01 yet, but Darvill could have simply left the show? Season One ended with him firmly in place to continue on the show and then he's swiftly taken off in the season opener. Sounds a lot like the Robbie Amell situation, where he got several jobs in between seasons and agreed to come back for an episode to wrap up Ronnie/Firestorm.
IIRC, Dominic explained he took those couple episodes off due to his skin cancer treatment.

I hope there will be more than 13 but because of the overpacked schedule that maybe unlikely.

It suffered from too many people in the main cast to know what to do with, and too little budget left to do much interesting with them for half the first season.
It seemed to take a story that should have been over in one episode and stretch it over two to try and make the budget go further.
They might have been able to get away with it if they had half the number of character because they could have developed the depth of the character but with so many main characters they had to give screen time to all but little of substance to all.
I have no doubt Rory disappearing in S1 was about budgets, much like a certain other primary cast member being 'missing' after the first episode of the S2.

I think they are keeping it at 13-16 episodes.
They have several shows waiting to come in as mid-season replacements.
