and I thought they were doing a new wolverine, but he's passing the torch to x-23? and this takes place the same year as they did dotp but this time they're both old and senile? I'm not an old man logan expert so I may have missed something.

To be fair. It's simply post first class. DOFP was still following the timeline of First class, all it did was change the direction of the future, but not the entire timeline itself.
The timeline had looked like this.
First class > DOFP (Dark future)
time travel to change the future, and now the timeline looks like this.
First class > DOFP (Better future?) > X-men Apocalypse > Deadpool > Logan
