Did they really need those scenes? I'm pretty sure we would have still known Reed was trying to make a teleporter if they just started at the science fair.

The Ultimate Fantastic Four comics had Ben rescue Reed from a swirly. This has them meet while Reed is being chased by bullies in Ben's family's junk yard.
In the case of the movie, the prologue showing Ben and Reed as children doesn't really tell us anything we don't pick up in or after the science fair scene.
