I always figured it was that he wanted a helmet he could take off but allowed him to see and speak clearly with it on. And, it needed to be long enough to create a force all the way around his head so that a telepath couldn't enter from underneath.
And, why wasn't he expecting telepathic attacks? He knew Emma Frost was a telepath. Just because she was on his side doesn't mean she's the only one with that power.
