As I knew from the pics of the old comics and all. Besides he was gonna move away with her to England and New York wouldn't have had Spider-Man anymore.

It was pretty obvious Gwen was dying in this movie. They pretty much did everything they could with Peter/Gwen's story in TASM1 (as inaccurate as it was from the comics) with Captain Stacy dying and then the movie ending with Peter breaking Captain Stacy's promise to stay away from Gwen due to him being Spider-Man.
