<p dir="auto">ok, i'm confused.  at the beginning of the movie, we see agent cooper hang someone in a house. who is this person?  and i thought cooper was a good agent? why did he murder someone?</p>

<p dir="auto">Do you honestly think that 'good agents' don't kill people?<br />
Who was he?  Nobody knows.  Presumably he had to die in specific circumstances for some operational reasons.  He plants evidence etc.  It was a CIA agent doing CIA shyte.<br />

<p dir="auto">The guy who got hanged was the same actor who played FBI agent Jeffrey Spender on the X-Files.  Just before he gets hanged, he says "Do you know who I am?" and Cooper responds "Yes".  We never do find out his name and I was wondering if it was supposed to be a joke at the expense of the X-Files joke or just a coincidence.</p>

<p dir="auto">He was a nobody.  It was just an insight into Cooper's character - ruthless agent for the CIA doing some dirty work while at the same time talking about kids problems on the phone with his wife and being asked to buy milk on the way home.  Just one of the many quirks of the movie.</p>
