The way I understood it was that Superman is immortal and cannot die. Other that Kryptonite, he is indestructable to even someone or something beating him to "death". Can someone explain that?

Lol have we been reading the same comic? One blown up gas station, one mall, couple of buildings and that's basically all. Not epic by a long shot. There' way more destruction in the movie, or in even one episode of DBZ.

Very very true b_blevins. I started reading the comics again and the fight scene in the comics gave me goosebumps but in the movie, there was no sense of dread or even drama with the fight.

Superman isn't immortal, he just ages slower than humans. He is like a solar battery; the yellow sun give him his power.
He can be killed but it is very very hard, you find out in the comics he has a sort of aura very close to his body that acts like a shield and in order to hurt him, other than kryptonite, you have to break the shield, which doomsday did. Their fight in the comics put the one in the film to shame in how devastating it was.
the film was ok but it never got me as emotional as when i read the comics that lead up to his death. That was, and still is, the best storyline in comics i've ever had the privilege to read.

@ whizkids
I think you mean Neron, not Naron. And Neron is essentially one of the big-bad-demons of the DC Universe. Kinda-sorta their version of Satan/Lucifer (much like Marvel's Mephisto).
Death, the personification of Death, is named Death. She was created by Neil Gaiman and appears during Blackest Night as well.

"Id like to know what youve done thats known worldwide that lets you call other peoples VERY successful stuff stupid though. "
It's called having an opinion. If he were to say "I could totally write/make up something better than that" then your point is somewhat valid, but the argument "well, what have
you
done" is silly and, frankly, kind of immature. Does that mean that even if you don't like something you force yourself to like it by saying "well, I haven't done anything and they have, so it must be quality"? Probably not; everyone has likes and dislikes and are perfectly entitled to feeling that something is stupid, silly, amazing, genius, whatever.
And, you know, just because something is successful doesn't make it good by any means at all. I'll spare you the obvious examples, but a lot of what's popular isn't good. But then, what's "good" is relative, so it doesn't matter.
What was I talking about again?

red sun takes away his powers.thats why he gets his strength from the yellow sun.
hes not immune to kryptonite, you might be thinking of the red blue thing they did years ago, I didnt follow the comics at that time.
Id like to know what youve done thats known worldwide that lets you call other peoples VERY successful stuff stupid though.

its just a way to make you feel sorry for the character and then he comes back more powerful i.e something to bring more excitement.
actually i dont' read the comics but according to the comic version then i googled years ago, he has new powers and immune to kryptonite
kinda stupid, all they need to do is make a kryptonite sword and cut his head off.
Although if we're poking holes in stuff, he could've just thrown doomsday into the sun and then use the red sun to heal back up.

@whizkids, Thanks alot man, that clears up a ton of problems I've had with the whole "resurrections" angle that both DC and Marvel have been known to throw out there from time to time.

Well, not really. It wasn't really explained well in this movie, but in the comics it was revealed shortly after he returned that if Superman were to suffer those kinds of injuries and die again, there would be no going back.
In a bit of retroactive continuity, it's also been revealed in the Blackest Night storyline (and here be spoilers) that Naron (the DC personification of death itself) allowed Superman, as well as several other characters who had gone through similar resurrections, to come back in order to get a foothold in the "living world."
I am glad you are with me, Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things.
