Why don't the people behind comic movies even study their source material anymore?
It's almost as if they just looked at the cover of an Iron Man comic and saw this guy in a powersuit fighting this Chinese guy with glowing rings on his hand and thought, "Ok, I know enough about this comic to make a movie about it."
The story behind the Mandarin was NEVER about magic! He was NEVER an ancient warlord or sorceror with elemental soldiers. By the way, giving these elementals the names of his actual henchmen was a further slap in the face to comic fans. The Mandarin was a Chinese man who existed in modern times. He wandered through the ruins of an ancient city and found the remains of an alien spaceship that crashed hundreds of years ago. Naturally this alien technology would've been perceived as magic to the people who didn't understand how it worked (I'll discuss this more in a bit). These aliens had the ability to rearrange matter, control weather, project beams, etc. It was these devices from the ship that the Mandarin used to make his 10 rings.
Now, I've read that some people HATE the idea of using the concept of advanced/alien technology to explain what would normally be considered magic. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but technology was SUPPOSED to be a major theme for this comic, especially since the hero's powers come from technology. I don't mind the East vs. West concept of this movie (of course, the lawyers might lol) but these people need to get their facts straight.
I think Superman Returns kind of stole Iron Man's thunder as far as this concept of technology. Remember when Lex Luthor said that throughout history, anything that couldn't be explained was interpreted as MAGIC? Imagine what would happen if Iron Man wound up in the Middle Ages. Also there was Lex's explaining of the legend of Prometheus and how throughout history, whoever controled the most advanced technology controlled the world. This was one of the things that made Iron Man's rivalry with the Mandarin so great. Tony Stark was trying to use his technology to help mankind while the Mandarin was using his stolen technology (stealing "fire" lol) to conquer.
But apparently, they just couldn't leave well enough alone. Oh well, this might just be my opinion. What do you guys think?

Sometimes it seems as if Avi Arad has a secret hatred of all things Marvel and is out solely to drag every character down that he can. To this end he seems to hire alot of writers with nearly the same mentality. They may claim that they are "Big Fans" of the source material. But the evidence on the little and big screne says they are damn liars. Real fans dont screw things up so badly. Real fans dont totally replace characters. Iron Man and Doctor Strange and the Live action X-Men 3 are prime examples of this.

No, this is not Ultimate Univese. For a start, Tony's father died when he was a teen in Ultimate, and he has a brain tumor instead of a heart condition. The attitude of the character is
slightly
more like Ultimate, but more PC. I'm guessing it IS supposed to be the same universe as the Ultimate Avengers animated movies however. While the movies were based on and character portrayals are similar to the Ultimates comic books, they borrowed from both canonical and Ultimate universes.

To all those who oppose to this movie, I enjoyed it immensely. I haven't read the comics, just the first two volumes of The New Avengers, so I don't really know the original origins of Iron Man, or the whole Mandarin story. But I enjoyed the movie none the less.

Isn't this suppose to be the Ultimate Universe?
This is different from the original Marvel Universe, ergo whatever is cannon in Marvel universe is not necessarily cannon in Ultimate universe (hence the difference in Avengers). If this is so I would not imagine the Marvel origins of Iron Man or Mandarin hold true (can't say for sure never really liked the Ultimate universe only read Spidey for the first 2 years, X-Men for one, and Avengers for 4 issues then i stopped altogether, though I did enjoy the Ultimate Avengers movies) when telling the story of the Ultimate universe.
Damn comic book companies and there need to multi-verse, especially DC who did away with it for a good reason and then stupidly reintroduced it.

I'm a big X-man comic reader and I know just how frustrating it is when a movie goes out of it's way to butcher it's original core material (X3) so I can totally sympathize there. However because the core Characters mostly retaied there personalityies and backgrounds I felt with this movie some of it's changes were forgiveable. Like I didn't mind the Guardians being themed after Mandarin's henchman, if you ever watched the 1st season of the 90's Iron Man cartoon you saw how poorly and goofy they were implemented and I'd say the Guardians were a step up and only foreshadowed that Mandarin would seek henchman with these powers in the future after he was resureccted. And while the physist role did get mangaled I liked having Rhody being in more of the movie imprisoned with Stark and Mandarin's rings still might have come from aliens that being how he held his first dynasty of China.
Other elements are less forgiveable like not mentioning how the Suit keeps him alive, not having him go to war, and having the hall of armors SO prematurely. But in the end I was suprised to see them stay as true as they did by including the original gray armor, I half expeceted the entire movie to be in Ultimate armor.
So in a What if kinda retelling I liked the film, warts and all but like everyone else I probably would have preferred a direct retelling that used extra themes to tie everything together.

It seems nearly ALL the recent Marvel movies have moved away from alien influence to favor the mystical. I guess mysticism is more stylish. The one exception I've noticed was the Ultimate Avengers.
Between space nasties and mystic mumbo jumbo I prefer space nasties. Oh well.

They probably rewrote his origin to alleviate a lot of royalty checks to writers.
I mean its a real easy fix to make it a gulf war I origin instead of Vietnam. That would put Stark in his thirties and Rhodey still would have been an ex army chopper pilot dude. Make Tony one of the WMD inspectors. Hey they can even throw in Hans blix!
I too was really turned off by the mystical aspects of it, instead of focusing on the technology. I came very close to stopping the movie a couple of timesI wonder what they will butcher with the live action movie.

It seems stupid to say that totally changing the story will make it more popular, since the original story was the one which became popular enough to warrant being made into a movie in the first place.
It isn't as big a deal for me when one little point here or there is changed, and sometimes those changes are reasonable enough, but to make huge and unnecessary changes just implies an attitude of
"Hey, you know that story that's been around for decades, gathered thousands and thousands of fans, sold millions of issues, and firmly embedded itself in our popular culture? Yeah, it blows. My version's much better."
and that's just narcissism.
In short- If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You know, we hear lots of explanations of why they decided to change the origins of such and such, and it doesn't make any damn sense ever. Why? They say they're trying to bring logic to an illogical world. They might as well just come out and say "We're trying to dumb the origin down because kids nowadays are retarded and wouldn't get the original as presented."
There's plenty of explanations, but just one real one: to make more money. Changing the origin makes the studio more money, because more people will see it if they understand it.
This movie, however, was horribly produced. What little advertising was on cartoon network and other cartoon shows. Kids will buy it sure. Will they appreciate the great art? Probably not. Would college age iron man fans have appreciated the movie more if it had been closer to the origin and not suck so bad? Certainly they would. It missed both target audiences. It'll probably flop.
"I've had a wonderful evening. But this wasn't it."

This movie is a small part of Avi Arad's "master" plan to whore out every Marvel character for animated and live-action films, so I guess it's kinda silly for you to expect them to respect the history and original comic book canon of the character. At the end of the day, all Avi Arad cares about is making that almighty dollar and he couldn't care less if the characters and their origins remain faithful to their comic book roots.
