She was very beautiful. It is just that her beauty faded very fast. She had always looked older than her age, and when she was 20 and looked like she was in early 30s, it was an asset to her. But when she got to actually be in her 30s and then in her 40s, she looked much older than she really was.

bacall defiantly has a hard look about her, she has a cold look at times. but that's her personality in real life too. she doesn't have that sweet face that someone like shirly jones would have. she has a harder look and she used that to her advantage in films. she was very pretty when she was younger but as she got older she just got harder and harder looking, like she would bite your head off if you said the wrong thing.

Not that they will ever read this, but to those who find Ms. Bacall 'ugly', you can send all of those women you find ugly over to my place. If that's what you find ugly, then I guess I like ugly women. And what is this nose to lips thing? Damn, I must be missing something when I have to take a ruler to someone's face to determine their attractiveness.

I agree with lizcarlo. Ftr I appreciate beauty that is of a classic sort. But women can have some non-conventional features and still be very attractive. Add in manners and the way they move and they can be more attractive than those who perhaps better meet the standards of conventional beauty.
IN any event it is inappropriate to use the word ugly to refer to a woman who does not meet the standards of conventional beauty.
Lauren Bacall in any event has very fine bone structure. Her eyes are perhaps too hooded to be classically beautiful, but of course that is part of her charm and individuality. I wouldn't change it at all.

There is different type of beautiful women. Just because she is not conventional looking does not mean she is ugly. I think she has exotic beauty. Her presence, style and attitude is the best. All that combined makes her stand out.

Very odd to suggest she was in any way ugly, I was watching a documentary about Marilyn Monroe, wondering how on earth she was chosen to represent beauty of the olden days, 5b4not that she wasn't hot, but when I had to think of a woman who I thought was the hottest, I only had to think for a few seconds, who was that woman with that classic line "You know how to whistle, don't you?", possibly tied with Rita Hayworth.
Guess I prefer that strong persona before the "I'm just a little girl"-bimbo that Marilyn had to play most of the time.

I agree she wasn't necessarily conventionally beautiful but rather projected a raw sexiness, at least in her youth (1940s to 1950s).

You Know, one cannot distinguish the differences when your talking with fans. To the fans, regardless, there is no one more beautiful, or better actor and etc. than the ones they admire. I always laugh when fans pit the looks of one actress to another, and somehow their acting talents enters the picture. Are we not talking about beauty, where does the talent come into it? I was watching some youtube on comparisons ..ieHedy LaMarr vs Vivien Leigh, Hedy vs Monroe, Hedy vs Tierneynotice the one constant in this setupHedy.They are always comparing other actress's to Hedy. Now in the case of Hedy and Vivian. Vivian fans had to throw in that she was the better actress than Hedybut, my beef is, does that mean she is more beautiful? Hedy did not have the good fortune in appearing in outstanding moviesie "Gone With The Wind", so that Scarlett Role always come into play, when making comparisons.

well said, and I appreciate that you said "Bet2000ty Grable type" instead of "Marilyn Monroe type" which is ALWAYS used silly because those two women, among loads of others, obviously, had the same look. so why use only Marilyn constantly, I don't know.

A well-known writer in the 1940's paid a compliment by writing that she must have a panther in her family tree.
On the other hand, my mother had a model friend in the 1940's who said that Bacall went a long way with what she had.
I'd say that she was unique and had a insouciance that contrasted nicely with the Betty Grable standard that many enlisted men were supposed to have idealized.

I think she has the creepiest eyes, especially when she turns her head and gives you that look. Very creepy. But she is no where in the ugly category. She's different. We all have are flaws.
