<p dir="auto">It was not a matter of being openly "liberal" or openly "conservative."  Hollywood did it's best in those days not to offend anyone.  Hollywood did not participate at all in the politics of the nation.  Only when Hollywood knew it could get away with it, did it allow it's stars to "come out of the closet."</p>
