Epilepsy cannot be ruled out. The drug she took was for epilepsy. Mariels husband saw her and said "She was the best I had seen of her in years" shortly before she died.

Cause of death was an overdose of phenobarbital. Some family members disputed her death was caused by suicide.
But h1c84er sister Mariel_Hemingway stated in interview in 2005 that she now accepts the findings from the coroner.

Later said to be an epileptic seizure. I don't think it was ever decided. The relatives don't believe the overdose happened. They believe the seizure caused her death.
