We think of Orson Welles as a great director himself, but there are some directors who I think would have been great for him to work with:
Cecil B. DeMille
Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Mervyn LeRoy
King Vidor
Otto Preminger
Rouben Mamoulian
Douglas Sirk
Fritz Lang
Anthony Mann
Raoul Walsh
William A. Wellman
Howard Hawks
William Wyler
George Stevens
Robert Siodmak
Edgar G. Ulmer
Fred Zinnemann
Stanley Kramer

I would add Welles and Victor Fleming.

Welles may have liked Ford, but I find his movies to be corny. I wonder what kind of movies Welles could possibly have done with Ford.

He did work with Fred Zinnemann in A Man For All Seasons
Welles had mixed opinions on him, but I would have liked to to have seen him in a Hitchcock movie. He loved John Ford so that would be a good choice. Also Francis Ford Coppola, Mike Nichols, or Peter Bogdanovich in his later days in the 60's and 70's when he acted more often.
