Assault on Precinct 13 getting more love than I expected, and deservedly so. Impossible to go wrong with any old school Carpenter film. No Dark Star fanboys here?

In The Mouth of Madness (1994) for me. Between that releasing and Strange Days (1995) concluding there were tonnes of good movies to see at the cinema
Not that there weren't plenty of great cinema films before and after, but that was a good run and so In The Mouth of Madness tops Carpenter's directorial and music composition list for me
It's the personal touches that you can't add to appreciation of lived experience. That information just isn't transferable but holds a lot of the weight of the situation in a non-objective fashion.
It's like Egg Shen always says; watch the wall

If you compare both, Steven Spielberg easily wins with many masterpieces:
Steven Spielberg
1975	Jaws
1977	Close Encounters of the Third Kind
1981	Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982	E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
1982	Poltergeist
1984	Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
1985	The Color Purple
1985	The Goonies
1987	Empire of the Sun
1989	Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
John Carpenter
1976	Assault on Precinct 13
1978	Halloween
1979	Elvis
1981	Escape from New York
1982	The Thing
1984	Starman
1987	Prince of Darkness
1988	They Live

Believe it or not, I gave Prince of Darkness a '10' while Escape of New York gets '9' from me. Many reasons why for both, but "favorite" has a different meaning for me compared to "best."
Longest winning streak by a director, I'll think about it, but good point there. I was really disappointed when he disappeared after the late 80's, thinking he had more left up his sleeve.

Looks like somebody voted for Prince of Darkness. Which is fine. I have zero issues with anything he made prior to '90s. Maybe Christine a little, but only because it's not a particularly good adaptation of the novel. But Carpenter in the '70s and '80s may be the longest winning streak by any director.
