Halloween
, the first John Carpenter that I saw.
However, my head says

The Thing. Best horror movie ever made and maybe the greatest film period.
Halloween and Christine are close behind. JC was the best horror director in his prime.

You are all a bunch on commercial bastards and should go back to school you predictable idiots.
Every single one of you numb nuts went for commercial films only made for Sales / Turnover / Profit purpose. Not two of you from the beginning post from October 2010 ever thought to mention
Someone's Watching Me (1978) also known as High Rise.
Amazing stalker murder triller film, well shot, creates a deep effect.
Its actually a classic now.
Urgh makes me sick, bunch of commoners

It's hard to tell.
Almost every movie shot between the late 70's and late 80's is excellent.
I pick 3:
They Live
Halloween
The Thing
honorable mention:
Big Trouble in Little China
Escape from N.Y.
Christine (this is probably the most "Carpenterian" of all: music, cinematography, and atmosphere at its best!

The fog and Assault on Precinct 13 are two films that have marked me as an individual, but Halloween, Escape from New York and In the mouth of madness score beside them also;yet the first two are always my candidates-together with Polanski's Cul-de-sac, for the title of my favourite film of all time!

Funny thing about Big John's movies is that I always feel like I'm watching my favourite when I'm re-watching one.
About a month ago, I showed The Thing to a friend and I was like: "this one is my favourite!"
Then, a week ago my mother asked me to show her In the Mouth of Madness which was one she particularly liked the first time she saw it. And while rewatching it I was like "ok, THIS one is really my favourite!"
And it happens all the time. Escape from New York, They Live, Prince of Darkness, Halloween, Assault, The Fog, Big Trouble in Little China
So, what is my favourite Carpenter movie? All of them!
Except for Vampires, Ghost of Mars and his episode for the MoH season 2 (I adored the 1st one though!). And gotta admit I haven't seen The Ward.
Lem! Lem, I'm sorry! But I had to, right?!
