Both are considered to be his best work and most iconic. As much as everyone loves the Elm Street movies, I give the edge to Scream. I always preferred the Halloween series to the Elm Street ones.
But man, Scream is just so much fun! It's scary but it's almost a parody of Horror films

My Pick is Scream but no one would guess why.
The real pick is Nightmare but he didnt really create Nightmare fun. He made the first one which really sucks imo. The Franchise is really good and much better than scream but not cause of him. So if you go Franchise vs Franchise is no question but since he didnt really make Freddy fun he cant get credit. Scream is highly original and mostly his creation even when it came to almost the entire franchise. It is so unique and such a cultural impact. It is difficult to make a horror icon that late in the game especially if you've done one already, the best of them- Freddy. So because of that it is really scream but he did create the biggest horror franchise of all-time and for that he deserves credit as well!
He's name is so quite scary also. I've always found it scary along with Freddy and Robert Englund.

Hard decision because I love them both. I also watched them both only in the last few years, not when they were current.
I think I'll go with Scream. I love that the scream series is one of the only horror's *(that I know of) that keeps a core cast. And what a cast! Sidney Prescott is my hero! If everyone around her didn't die, I'd want to be her friend. I love how badass she is and it was one of the first and few horror's that there was some kickass female characters. Even Wes acknowledges that horror was/is (I still think it can be) incredibly misogynistic so I think Sidney (and even Gale) were really important characters to have! I generally am not a fan of parodies so I love the way Scream combined the humourous and horror 1354elements. It was still scary and interesting but obviously mocking the genre.
Nightmare is great too, when I was a teenager (about 10 years ago) I saw the first one under my older brother's advice. I loved Freddy! He was terrifying! The concept of the whole dream invasion was unique and scary. I still don't know anyone that has done that nearly as well as Nightmare, partly because I think anyone would be too scared/stupid to really try! Now that I'm older (25) I've just polished off the whole series. I'm conflicted because I know how bad Freddy is but I actually love him haha. I think the first three were definitely the best but Wes Craven's New Nightmare was REALLY cool and re-invigorated the series for me!
I guess the thing that stands out to me between the two films is that (for me) Scream is about the survivors kicking ass with the mystery of who is the killer this time, whereas Nightmare is more so about Freddy and what crazy way will he kill next. Now I love these both but I really do like the survivor angle of Scream. I'd heard that both the Friday the `13th and Nightmare sequuels got really crap and watching Friday the 13th sequels first, I was worried about the Nightmare one's but they held up MUCH stronger than Jason imo. I gave up on F13 at around 6-7, whereas I still enjoyed the Nightmare sequels whilst acknowledging they'd weakened!
Ok, I so didn't mean to write a whole essay! Sorry haha!

I personally prefer Scream to Nightmare, but you cannot deny the cultural impact Nightmare on Elm Street had on the horror-genre.
Like, it was so iconic that nobody could imitate it. There were heaps of Scream rip-offs, but when it comes to 'Dream-stalker' movies, Freddy owns that beep

Scream was great at the time, but it has not aged well and the film is pretty bland now.
Nightmare is timeless and changed horror forever. It gave us a unique take on a horror icon, genuine original horror scenes.
Plus Wes only directed Scream, where as he wrote and directed Nightmare, and you can really tell the drop in quality with the writing in Scream.
And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.
