The Academy of Motion Pictures often awards overrated actors/actresses, but Jodie Foster is perhaps the most overrated of them all. Her performance in The Silence of the Lambs was just such a 1 dimensional performance. Any competent actress could have taken the part and done just as good a job. Like explaining the 'lambs screaming' story, and trying to get Lecter to help her with the case, she totally overacted. I'm not convinced by anything she did in that movie. Clearly an actress giving a performance, trying so hard, but failing. I'm very very surprised at all the acclaim she gets, particularly for that role. Her work in Taxi Driver was typical of a young girl going into acting. Nothing special there. But I last saw her in Elysium and she was downright AWFUL. Razzie worthy. I haven't seen The Accused yet though. She reminds me of those people you see who get lucky and slip through the cracks, and don't belong where she is. I bet even in her head she's thinking "wait, people really think I'm great? Ok!"

Yes, she was very good in
Contact
, (perhaps he second best 90's role), though I do find the film a tad disappointing overall and I really wasn't buying into the chemistry with her and McConaughey's character.
Why she made
The Beaver
is mind-boggling. It was supposed to be a catharsis for her buddy Mel Gibson.

Old post but here goes. Foster was a natural in the moment actress and the performance she gave in
The Accused - '88
, as an everyday working class trailer trash girl, connected with a lot of people. Same with her empowering role as Clarice in
The Silence Of The Lambs - '91
. Her vulnerability, immersed in both strength and natural awkwardness, was something I found quite sublime.
Foster had the ability to make so much out of so little and while an extremely intelligent actress, (and person), she also appeared to have very little pretentiousness about herself. Her second Oscar win catapulted her into the top realm of superstardom and this is where she then appeared to flounder.
She wanted to direct and be taken seriously as a director and have women held to the same stead as men in her circles. Not that women weren't already honored and revered, (who else is going to bring a female role to life better than a female?), but the pretentiousness then started to creep in and she failed to grasp that the negative feminine dynamic is not the same as the positive masculine one.
Her choice of roles didn't appear to be that intuitive either and she was down right embarrassing to watch in the deservedly forgotten
Nell - '94
. She started to age and the role model aspects that were appealing for many of both genders started to diminish. Her EGO appeared to get a tad out of control.
I have no issue with both her Oscar wins, though Sarandon winning for
Thelma and Louise
wouldn't have phased me either, but since I hold a lot of reverence for Lambs, I'm pleased it ran away with the top 5 awards it did.
This clip is worth watching, to see how natural and real she was after winning her first Oscar and its so easy to see how many were smitten with her. She was a one of kind, both as a child actress and a young adult.

The MOST overrated actress, EVER, is meryl ****ing streep. That rat-face of hers. Brrrrrrrrrr! At least Jodie is hot. I'd do her. I'd let her strip for me whilst I am lying naked on the floor, by the time she's naked, she can pole dance on my penis and after that I'd give her a good pounding. The mere thought of meryl ****ing streep however is enough to make me go soft for a week or so.

I dont see how she 'overacted' in the Clarice Sterling role. The 'lambs' story was a painful childhood memory, and she hit just the right tone in conveying it, I felt. She wasn't crying hysterically, or talking to Lecter in an overly casual "Oh well, this nutty thing happened some years ago, but I've totally gotten over it. Nice weather we're having lately, tho!" tone. And the 'being stalked' at the end scene didn't show Foster over-acting the moment, either. She didn't lose her cool, even tho her life was clearly in danger. Jonathan Demme seems to know how to work with actors, for the most part. Note that Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hanks both won Oscars for working with him, as well.
