US actor Val Kilmer has died at the age of 65.
He became known for his roles in

.
His daughter said that he died of pneumonia in Los Angeles.
In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, from which he later recovered.
Val Kilmer was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles and (at the age of 17) was accepted as
one of the youngest students ever to the prestigious
Juilliard School of Music and Drama
in New York.

Val Kilmer achieved international fame through his roles in his first major blockbusters,
Top Gun
(1986),
The Doors
(1991), and
Batman Forever
(1995).
The actor made his film debut in Top Secret (1984), a slapstick parody of the Cold War.
He played the lead role of a US-American singer in Berlin who unwittingly
becomes entangled in an East German plot to reunify the country.
Kilmer's career is considered steep but mercurial. During his creative career, he withdrew from Hollywood for more than a decade, playing supporting roles or appearing in front of the camera for TV productions. In a 2012 interview with

, he said he had an unusual career and also had other interests.

Kilmer was married to actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996.
He leaves behind two children from this marriage, daughter Mercedes (*1991) and son Jack (*1995).
