Just watched Stay (2005) in which he is totally outclassed by a far younger Ryan Gosling. I would class him as one of these average one-dimensional actors who caught a lucky break from a couple of iconic cult movies like Shallow Grave & Trainspotting which quite suited his limited range, was in the right place at the right time to get cast in huge blockbusters because of that (Star Wars) and has been dining out on it ever since. Kinda like Ving Rhames after Pulp Fiction.

I disagree. It'd all relative. Sure he's no Day-Lewis but he's a very c5b4apable, very good actor. Just compare his portrayals in Trainspotting to Star Wars Ep. 3 to Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and you'll see he has a good range.
