It was a longtime ago but if I remember he was a victim too. Polanski had drugged him as well and " did his thing" with Jack. I think its part of the reason that when a sequel to Chinatown was made, Polanski wasn't asked to direct. Jack directed it himself as a way of "getting back" at Polanski.
