Prairie Home Companion is one of the best movies about life and death I've ever scene. It's like a great summing up of Altman's perspective on human existence. Really, utterly brilliant.

If you like Nashville and Short Cuts, you might enjoy A Wedding, which is another large-ensemble movie. Not as good as those two but it has its moments.
Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is good, if you can find it.
A Perfect Couple is enjoyable.
"Enjoyable" isn't the word for Quintet, but it's extremely powerful.
For latter-day movies, Cookie's Fortune and Kansas City are both excellent. Dr. T and the Women is widely-despised, but I enjoyed it.
I know I'm shouting, I like to shout.

How did you like it? I havent seen it myself, but I do know it tends to divide audiences quite radically.
