I was watching this documentary on American films of the 1970s. Nearly every director who was somebody during that time was interviewed. There was a segment where they each named the filmmakers that influenced them. So you had them naming Antonioni, Bergman, Godard, Truffaut, Kurosawa, etc.
But when it comes
Altman's
turn he simply says, "the directors who most influenced me, I couldn't tell you their names because I would go and see a movie that was so awful, I'd come out saying, 'I don't want to do that'".
He always seemed to have a rebellious spirit.

Yes, of all the rebel filmmakers of the seventies, Altman was the most rebellious. You should read a book called "Robert Altman: The Oral Biography" by Mitchell Zuckoff. Has many great interviews with Altman himself and almost everyone who ever knew or worked with him. Great book. In fact, I'm going to make a post about it right now.

A DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. Great multi-part doc on the 70's. His answer is the best. Of course, he was influenced by Bergman, Bunuel, etc.
