I was trying to figure out just what Mr. B said that had the Trek fans so up in arms (http://www.treknation.com/columns/briefing/beating_beltran.shtml_I was expecting something vicious, or horrible or unprofessional. Instead what I found was totally cool.
So I was looking a site that had quotes from Mr. Beltran. Evidently he didn't like the technobabble, or the Prime Directive and dared to say things like 'Chakotay should have dropped Janeway and hooked up with a cute ensign' to paraphrase that remark. And that Star Trek writers never have sex.
Bwah ha! Love it!
I say Amen!!!
1.. Technobabble is useless! It makes me feel like the grown-ups are talking about something I don't understand and maybe I should leave the room and go play with my Farscape DVDs.
And it's not that RB isn't able to deliver complex dialogue; he works on Shakespeare scenes just for grins.
2. Originallly, The Prime Directive was only in place for Kirk to finds ways around it, (Spock: Captain, this culture is in a state of arrested developmentKirk: Gangway, Spock! I'm usin' my phaser and I'm gonna talk this here evil computer to blow itself up!) The Prime Directive was never there to hamstring the characters from ever helping people in need.
3. Kirk hopped in bed just about every week with some moon maiden or green girl, so why is Janeway so afraid to have a life? When did celebacy become a Star Trek norm??? A buddy of mine used to call it Star Trek: Dowager.
And, Mr. Beltran made fun of Chakotay and other cast and characters. ooo! Naughty!
I've been doing that since the '70s. If I can't have fun with Trek, what's the point?
There are also a number of reports of how nice he is to fans and gracious. He said he enjoyed the conventions.
That doesn't sound like the horrid person that's been painted here and elsewhere.
In ANY case, devil or angel I like Trek, and Chakotay, and Robert Beltran.

He most definitely has a wonderful wicked sense of humor.
A friend and I went to see him at a convention in New Jersey (this was years ago when Voyager was on, early in the show).
He came out onstage and off the bat saw that most of the people (like us) were sitting in the bleachers (because we didn't buy the reserved seats). He said he noticed that there were a lot of empty seats on the floor (reserved seats) and that everyone on the bleachers should come down to the floor seats and fill them in (which they did). Where we were sitting we had a great view, so I didn't want to move.
The second thing that was really great was, when asked by a fan whether he knew if they were going to have the Borge on (like I said this was early in the show, maybe season 2)? He said "Victor Borge, I'd love to have him on, Kate and I dance well together", and then he proceeded to do a little dance (very suave).
I was very glad we went to see him.

I agree about the comment of Captain Kathryn Janeway. She's an attractive, interesting woman. Why wasn't she allowed to have boyfriends or a husband? Or at least a girlfriend to pal around with when she was off duty.
Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

You're preaching to the choir with me. I agree entirely. I love his sense of humor and can see it for what it is. People who throw their hands in the air in horror and read the wrong thing into everything he says need to loosen up and have fun with Star Trek again.
