I got sucked into watching "THe Substitue" (hilariously bad, but good?) and while sitting here I checked IMDB to see how the movie ranked. Anyway, I looked up Berenger just to see whatever happened to the guy. WIkipedia makes mention of Tom's association with Scientology in the mid/late 1980's. He then purportedly renounced it after divorcing his wife at that time (also a scientologist). Here's my theory, maybe his renouncement of Scientology did no favors for his career??? who knows..

I can't figure out what happened to Tom Berenger's career. Scientology might have something to do with it. They are supposed to be very powerful in Hollywood.

Here is another article that talks about Berenger and Scientology. I was unaware that he was ever involved, but it appears he was only involved for a very short time..
Here is an article written when Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were divorcing:
If Cruise and Kidman face off over Scientology's controversial practices, they won't be the first celebrities to do so. Others include O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark and movie actor Tom Berenger.
Clark's successful battle with her ex-husband, computer programmer Gordon Clark, coincided with the opening of the Simpson trial.
In 1997, "Platoon" star Berenger, 51, claimed in his divorce battle with ex-wife Lisa that she was brainwashed by Scientology and had become "so involved and mentally entrenched in Scientology that she abandoned me."
Among his stipulations was that their children, Chelsea, now 13, Chloe, 12, and Shiloh, 5, should not be raised in Scientology.
Neither Berenger nor Clark returned calls.

Reminds me of when Parker Stevens ended his marriage with Kirstie Alley over Scientology. Travolta even tried to intervene. It was not long after that, that there was a movement to indoctrinate spouses into Scientology. Cruise tried for years to get Kidman to join.
Anyway, not sure what his comments had on his career dump. I think he made some poor choices on his own along the way. But, still, when dealing with that cult, I wouldn't put anything past them.

There's some press about Berenger and Scientology, so I'm not sure it's all a spoof. If he did dabble in Scientology for a while, I credit him for getting out before too much damage was done.
http://www.geocities.com/tomberengeronline/pages/dallas.html
To quote the article (from Dallas Morning News)
The actor and Lisa, his wife of 11 years, were divorced last December. He blamed her involvement with the Church of Scientology. She blamed his involvement with makeup artist Patricia Alvaran.
It doesn't say whether he was a participant of the church (or maybe I didn't read that far). If he was a part of it, it may have been reluctantly and just for a spell, just because his wife was into it.

Wikipedia is notoriously inaccurate on many, b68many pages. It's because anyone can post on it and edit content already on there. Hence, celebrities who are very much alive being reported dead, etc. Didn't you think the Berenger/Scientology part had all the elements of a spoof? Albeit a really unfunny one.

So Berenger had no history with scientology? Why is Wikipedia inaccurate? On what grounds?

Are you serious? That entry about Tom is obviously phoney. Can you honestly see him making a statement like, "Once we convert Tom Selleck, the trio of Toms will bring true uplifting to the masses of The States"? I would have thought the phrase "Toms of Scientology" might have given it away. Anyone can post on that dumb site and have the gullible and naive believe it. Jeez Don't believe everything you read - especially on Dickipedia.
