He had full on dementia in his final years, but the initial symptoms and process usually starts a lot earlier, which likely influenced his decision as well
If Connery said in 2006 (kidney surgery) that he retires, it wasn't the same year as Hackman.

Either way, they both couldn’t deal with the stress of the movie-business anymore.
Connery had kidney surgery in 2006.
His dementia started in his final years.
He became 90 years old and died 2020.
