I think one way to coax him out of retirement would be to option one of his novels
for a movie. Offer him a small part in the film and I bet he would do it!

While Welcome to Mooseport was a cute movie, having it be the final credit for someone like Hackman just doesn't seem right.

He probably doesn't like how Hollywood works now and thinks it best to leave his acting legacy as is, like Sean Connery did.
I do wish he did another movie though, there are plenty of directors he could collaborate with.

Gene Hackman was originally going to play a part in Sean Penn's "The Indian Runner" that went to Charles Bronson. If Penn ever casts him in one of his movies, i think he will come out of retirement. The parts in his movies are just so good. Look what he did to Charles Bronson in the film and for Hal Holbrook in his Academy Award nominated part in "Into The Wild".

For me, this wish for just one more brought to mind
so many of the great performances he gave over his long career
and how much I miss watching him in great movies.
I remember the day the press announced that he was retiring
from acting. It made me feel like the day my favorite neighbor
moved away. I miss that Gene Hackman in movies these days.

i agree. gene hackman is an actors actor. and i would really love to see him give us one last great acting performance.

Indeed, If you can't retire when you're 80 then when can you retire? He's been working long enough. Time to live life 100% when you're getting so old since you might not have that long left.

Give him a break, retired means retired.

Well, how about doing a small indie film or in Europe? Hollywood is not the only place you can do what you love, you know! Plus it will most likely be done in a short time and not too physically demanding, so I'm sure he can pull it off. Come on Gene, one last good role please!

I, too, am waiting hopefully for another film starring Mr. Hackman. I've been amazed by and entertained by him for over forty years. He's one of the few actors we have whose presence is sufficient to guarantee good entertainment.

I think he said a few years ago on Larry King or some other show that he didn't see himself doing another film.
I think "Runaway Jury" was the last good film he did.

It's not health related. He just got sick of the Hollywood machine and all the BS that comes along with acting. He has stated that he still loves to act but he finds the industry itself stressful. Yes, he is 81 years old, but he still has it all together if the GQ article from June that I read is any indication. He writes historical fiction these days (and gets pretty good reviews). I still hope he will make a comeback (and anyone who loves great acting should as well), but from what I've read from him, it's up in the air at this point. I don't think he's totally ruled it out but it would probably have to be a pretty special role/situation to bring him back.
Let us take the risks of peace upon our lives, not impose the risks of war upon the world.

Count me among those who would love to see him do one last film.

That's a great way to put it. Moreover, as bad as Mooseport is, at least it wasn't embarrassingly bad. I cringe every time I see DeNiro on the bill these days.
