I always enjoyed Hurt as Chancellor Sutler in
V For Vendetta
, but last night I caught
The Hit
on cable. Man, did he make a good gangster: ruthless, expressionless and cold as ice. Are there any other films where he played a bad guy? Thanks.

A Man For All Seasons is an award winning film: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. This film was one of John Hurt's earliest film performances in which he played a greedy, backstabbing, power grabbing social climber. An all around great film and a must see!

Yes, he was really sad and pathetic in "!0 Rillington Place". He was so tragic when he kept on forlornly reiterating "Christie done it."

I forgot about The Black Cauldron. That was a bad film but I had a love/hate outlook on the Creeper's character. He was funny and annoying all the same.

The Black Cauldron is pretty bad, but he's great in it as The Horned King. I remember seeing it as a kid, and he was the only thing Ida0 liked about it. It's only a voice-role, but he steals every scene he's in.

What about as Victor Foss, the nasty casino owner in "Owning Mahowny"? It starred Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
The character of Foss really stood out for his snarling brutality.

He shows such versatility in "I Claudius", mad one moment, suddenly sane, yet unpredictable and thus untrustworthy. I would watch it again from start to finish (or even just his scenes), but I just watched it again 2 months ago (second time within a year).
I like his portrayal of Caligula more than Malcolm McDowall's, although everything about that film was just repulsive.
An underrated movie! It takes about 30 minutes for the story to take off, but then it gets intense!
