Not much talk of I, Claudius in the eulogies.
Of course, 1984 in 1984 is the standout.

Such a memorable performance! Hurt's Caligula was crazy, scary, pathetic and bizarre in such nuanced and realistic ways that the character never slipped into being unbelievable or far-fetched. He stood out - even in the company of the other wonderfully able actors in that production. John Hurt gave us so many emotional and intellectual treasures throughout his working life; I remember him with gratitude an1354d affection.

Watched I, Claudius recently again, what a towering performance from John as little boots Caligula. Every second on screen you couldn't take your eyes off him, like when he did that dance dressed as a woman! One of the funniest things ever. R.I.P John you will be missed.

The entire cast of I, Claudius was outstanding, not the least of which was John Hurt. It was that role, as Caligula, that put John Hurt on the map. The chemistry between Hurt and Derek Jacobi as Claudius and Sian Phillips as Livia, is one of the pillars of the show.
Just before Caligula is about to be hacked to pieces by the guards in a tunnel beneath the coliseum, the exchange between Hurt and Jacobi is priceless in its subtlety and its wit. The series, I, Claudius is must viewing by anyone who wants to know what good acting is all about.
John Hurt, with his many, many tremendous performances, will be missed. Let's be thankful so much of his work is preserved on film.
