Because the Democratic Party has represented the status quo since the '90s and the status quo isn't working. But Democrats will undoubtedly choose some donor-approved corporatist next time anyway. A bipartisan status quo that only serves the elites always leads to increased radicalization on both sides. The story of the past decade and a half of American politics is that Republicans were able to successfully co-opt this widespread resentment via the faux populism of the Tea Party and MAGA, while Democrats did everything possible to keep the old guard in control, preserving a party that cares only about civility, decorum, norms and accepting bribes from Wall Street.
