More accurately, I'd say he tries to report on people and situations he finds important to report on. Because he does not paint such figures in boiled down, convenient brushstrokes with connotations of fear attached does not make him a "bad" person, but rather a curious one.
It's convenient for us to think of people as "monsters" when in reality, this country can be viewed as rather monstrous in places around the world. In some strange way, I think it makes us feel "safer" to think from this oppositional standpoint all the time, like being fueled by fear.
