In the summer of 1959, Hollywood descended on Melbourne for the making of Stanley Kramer's post-apocalyptic film On the Beach. The film starred legendary actors Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire. The film was based on a novel of the same name by Australian-British author Nevil Shute. In the story, the rest of world has been destroyed in nuclear war. Melbourne is the last place on earth where anyone is alive. But they have only 5 months at the most. They know that eventually the nuclear cloud will kill them too. Now a new documentary called Fallout takes audiences behind the scenes of the making of On the Beach as well as looking at the life and work of Nevil Shute. The director is Lawrence Johnston.
