He got canned from Back To Future for not having the right comic timing apparently. Fox is perfect, but I’d say Fox was the first choice all along. When he suddenly became available Stoltz got dropped.
Stoltz was not a bad actor. The film sold on Fox’s name and Eric had Mask released that same year.

He was heartbreakingly Rocky in Mask. I like him a lot and I don't think he's ever done anything as brilliant as that since.
