Emma's comments really say more about her than about Audrey-and not in a good way. I'd like to see how Emma's fans would react if another actress publicly came out and criticized Emma's acting. Hopefully it'll happen while she's still alive, so she knows how it feels.
A guy thing? WTF? Marilyn Monroe might be a guy thing. Or Brigitte Bardot or Rita Hayworth. Audrey was the girl other girls looked up to and wanted to be like.
Audrey Hepburn was so humble that if she were alive today, she would probably say, "Emma's entitled to her opinion and I don't think much of myself, either". Then, she would go on with her UNICEF work, tirelessly crusading to bring awareness to starving children around the world-thereby making Emma look even more petty and mean-spirited.

My problem isn't with Emma having an opinion or even with her disliking Audrey's acting, my problem is with the fact that she more or less completely spit on Audrey's film legacy saying she had no talent and was a guy thing. Could Audrey sing-No not really,could she act-matter of opinion, I find her to be good in the roles she played but probably not a actress of extraordinary range, but Emma then went overboard and said Audrey was "a guy thing".an. A guy thing would be Raquel Welch,Pamela Anderson,etc they appeal mainly to men. Audrey on the other hand was a fashion icon for women and seems to be beloved or at least well liked by a largely female audience who like her grace and style. The bottom line is Emma crossed the line from intelligent critique to all out bashing

Well said. Emma did not merely give an opinion such as "I am not an Audrey Hepburn fan" or "I never enjoyed her acting" but she stated it in a manner that sounded like she was stating a known fact. She did not say one nice thing about Audrey and came off incredibly arrogant. Emma is talented but she is hardly god's gift to acting and she seems to find herself terribly witty

This is what I think. If Audrey Hepburn was alive she would have been classy enough to say 'she's entitled to her opinion and I think my work proves she's wrong' and go on. I know Emma's not perfect so maybe she spoke out of turn who knows. I just think it's up to you to decide whether you want to continue to see Emma's films or not whether she likes Audrey's work should be irrelevant.

I don't think she meant to insult Audrey Hepburn. She was just stating her opinion. What I don't understand is why everyone's so sensitive about Audrey Hepburn for all of a sudden. Talent aside and all that, I think most people seem sensitive about it simply because Audrey Hepburn is dead. She wasn't a singer, so the fact that she couldn't sing isn't a lie; however, lots of leading ladies couldn't sing and had stand ins. She was an average actress though likeable. I think Emma jokes a lot in her interviews and she made some off the cuff remarks. Let's face it, the conservative British Press loathes Emma simply for her more liberal politics so they are just dying to get ahold of something in order to bash her.

Apart from yours, of course, the comments here are insane. So what if Audrey is dead. Yes, she was quite charming, but one can criticize her acting. And again, she was criticizing her in this ONE PART.
To reply to a later post by I believe the OP who was attacking my mention of the original title of the film (The Big Bang), I was stating a FACT.Hollywood wanted to change it from this original title, which is being used everywhere else, to "Nanny McPhee Returns", in part for political reasons, in part because they thought it would sound "too violent", using the word "Bang".
Anyway, I can't believe this conversation has gone on this long. The poor woman says one little thing, and she has to apologize for everything. She later said, on Craig Ferguson a few weeks ago (a GREAT appearance, I might add), about fags being flogged at the Isle of Wight, and that it's still in the rules. MAN did she get in lot of flack for that comment. She actually meant the Isle of Man, she later said, and then got in trouble from them. She had to talk to the mayors/presidents/whatever top political official they have in those areas, and apologize, and emphasized the fact that she was making a JOKE, which apparently many people in this country don't know as well.
I sometimes think it's not worth it for celebrities to make comments about anything, especially in England, with all the backlash they receivebut I'm glad Emma basically just doesn't give a damn, and speaks her mind.

I don't see a lot of Hepburn fans coming here actually. There's a handful of people coming here with the same opinions you have on her critique. I have certain director's work who I like and simply because one of them is female I hear all the time 'women can't direct'duh, yes they can direct and have directed and some of their work is quite good. I'm simply stating, Emb68ma Thompson has the right to state her opinion about anything she wants. Whether you agree with it or not, is your business.
