The official biography of Don Ameche, with a John Landis introduction, will be out in November of 2004 from BearManor Media. Rare pictures and family interviews, it promises to be great!
Good new books on old radio & old films:

It was a disappointing book in that it basically focused on Ameche's career. As for his personal life, Ameche was a complex man. In his younger days he was outgoing, a lover of practical jokes and fun, but then he became stuffy and distant. He was one of those who cared more about his religious beliefs than he did about those close to him, but he did manage to make peace with all his children in the end.

I read it and was disappointed. It didn't go into his personality much, but mostly focused on Ameche's film, radio and stage career. I think the definitive book on Ameche will have to wait. I was confused though about some reviews on the book. Ameche had been painted as a generous but cold and distant man, but that's not what I found here. He came across as strict but certainly not cold. In fact, Ameche seemed quite reasonable, generous, and somewhat outgoing. I may have to give it another read.
