Boogie Nights first, and then just go in order from there. You can't go wrong with any one of his films, though.

How is Boogie Nights the first chronologically? It is not the first that he directed (that is Hard Eight) and its setting is not the earliest (that is There Will Be Blood).

Watch in chronological order starting with Boogie Nights.

As a huge fan of Anderson since Boogie Nights I agree with the people going in chronological order. My favorite of his is The Master, it's a incredible work of art and beautifully filmed and the acting is amazing. Anderson always gets the best from his actors in every film. Enjoy, I envy you getting to watch all of his films for the first time.

I agree with this. I would also suggest 'Punch Drunk Love' after the 'Magnolia' suggestion

In some sense I feel as if you should watch Magnolia first, because it's his best IMO, but I also feel that maybe you should watch a few others first so you can get an appreciation for his work before you watch his best movie.

Nothing wrong with watching his films chronologically, from Sydney to Inherent Vice. Seeing how he grew is f_ucking awesome.
If you wanna start from his most accessible/entertaining films to his most challenging, watch in the following order:
Sydney (Optional)
Boogie Nights
Punch Drunk Love
There Will Be Blood
Magnolia
The Master
Inherent Vice
You mean Norman Bates Jr. is the baby daddy?

Boogie Nights is probably his most accessible film, so of start with that. Next I'd go with There Will Be Blood, which is probably his best movie to date. Then I'd watch Punch Drunk Love (his most obscure film) and after those three you'll have a good sense of his range. You can watch the rest in any order you'd like.

just start at the beginning. hard eight. starting there doesn't just leave the best for later but it's very rewarding to see how a filmmaker evolves.

Boogie Nights
. For a lot of people, it was their first and for many people, it epitomizes PTA in a single film. Then I'd backtrack to
Hard Eight
, then watch the rest chronologically.
