as it was brought up earlier, it is some scenes that make Argento's films memorable. For me, some of the best have to be Jessica Harper walking through that huge corridor in Suspiria, as well as the ending scenes, and as someone also mentioned, the underwater scene in Inferno. I'm also fond of the opening of Phenomena, and of course that creepy doll in Deep red.
As for my top 5:
1 - Suspiria
2 - Inferno
3/4 - Phenomena / Deep red (can't decide)
5 - Giallo (joking, what a bore)

Suspiria - a masterpiece of atmospheric horror(8/10)

Deep Red (7/10)

The Bird with Crystal Plumage (6.5/10)

Inferno (6/10)

Cat o' nine tails (6/10)
Despite their flaws, Argento films contain scenes that leave a memorable impression. For example the opening scene in Suspiria and the underwater scene in Inferno, just to mention a couple. The 70's was his greatest period.

Close between 2 & 3 for me. I've never been able to get into Inferno as much as so many others seem to. My list would continue:

Phenomena

Cat o'Nine Tailes

Four Flies on Grey Velvet

Inferno

The Stendhal Syndrome
Top 5 Worst:

Dracula 3D

Phantom of the Opera

"Pelts"

I've seen absolutely everything directed by Argento (including The Black Cat, the Doors into Darkness episodes and "Jenifer") except for "Cinque Giornate"
I think Dracula 3D is EVEN WORSE than Phantom of the Opera because Phantom is tongue in cheek and cheesy from the outset.
Trauma, Sleepless, The Third Mother, and The Card Player are all just kinda middling to me. They each have their moments and perhaps if I could be enthused to re-watch them one day, I might be able to make some reassessments. I don't hate The Card Player as much as many. It's just a forgettable piece of Euro-TV pap.
Argento's greatest faults as a director are, in my eyes:

not LEARNING how to direct actors

not seeking out better script writers and allowing coherence to improve due to their efforts (if he himself isn't going to provide it)

adopting digital and CGI when his strengths lie with what good old film and special effects at their best can achieve

being loyal to "Cinema Citta" despite its heyday being LONG gone (in other words, he needn't always film within the Italian studio system which is a shadow of its former self)

attempting comedy (the scenes in Deep Red with Daria Nicolodi are just painful and are a major reason why I don't rate it quite as highly as many others)
