I have read a Nigel Cawthorne's book about Hollywood stars, including John. But some time ago I have also read that this book is just a trash. Anyway, is there any reliable Jack's bio available to buy by Internet? I have been searching, but with no effect. Or maybe someone can tell me something about his private life?

Mary Astor's first husband, Kenneth Hawks, had a low sex drive while she had a high one. Astor eventually got used to the fact that he didn't have a high sex drive and was devastated when he was killed in an air crash.
But imagine that the first person to delight you in bed was JOHN BARRYMORE! She went from Barrymore to Hawks!

Why should anyone care what someone's great-uncle said?
Also, NOWHERE was it said that none of these stars were not sexually ambiguous. I think you were just looking for a right to be offended.
If you want people to believe that John Barrymore had sex with men then you better have something rather than "you offended someone's great uncle" or some hurt feelings because you think someone made a homophobic comment [which never happened].

He never said that NONE of them were sexually ambiguous.
Barrymore was the great love of Mary Astor. He taught her about sex [she was 17 and he was 42], art, writing, etc. She kept all his letters, telegrams, memorabilia etc. She then went on to marry Kenneth Hawks and had to wait until after marriage to have sex. Hawks' sex drive was virtually non existent, but she learned to adapt until he died in a plane crash.
Imagine going from John Barrymore to…………THAT!

Metalman,
You do have emotional investment in maintaining that all or most leading men of the Studio Age were not sexually ambiguous. You do a disservice to the man whose great-uncle told about the stars he'd seen personally.
Remember, gays can marry in the US now.

YEAH RIGHT!!!
I never said that NONE of them were not sexually ambiguous, but there is still a lot of crap written about these people from hacks like Darwin Porter, David Bret, and the list goes on and on.
If these stories were true about John Barrymore and the rest, there would have been rumors about it long ago. You cannot keep something like that hidden without leaving a little whiff of gossip.
John Barrymore was well known for his womanizing. He and Chaplin etc would go to out of reach places like Catalina Island or somewhere else in Hollywood away from the public eye to indulge their lusts.
These stars were human beings. A scandal like these could ruin them. Look what happened to Arbuckle, and he was innocent.

Contrary to what we would like to believe about the screen legends of yesteryear so long past, many of them WERE sexually "ambiguous", especially early in their young careers. My great, grand uncle was creole from what is now Gretna Louisiana, and being a gay black man of color, he would often pass for Latin or italian. He left for Hollywood in his youth, and became a bartender at some INFAMOUS speak-easys, and the stories that he related to my grandmother were laced with forbidden love, sexually, alcohol, and drugs. It was said that he once bedded valentino, and they were madly in love. " His love-making was breath-taking, he would kiss you and you felt as if he was kissing every part of your body, all at the same time". They continued seeing each other,on the DL ofcourse, until Ramon Novarro discovered their relationship, and threatened to out Valentino to his studio,(possibly because he and valentino were in a sexual relationship allready). My uncle was frank with my grandmother and told her EVERYTHING in his old age. Charlie Chaplin was one of his lovers, and he said Mr. Chaplin WAS hugely endowed, and was a "lover of legend,he left my body fulfilled, but my soul empty". Marlene Dietrich was a lover of booze, and when she got tispy enough, she fondled and molested ANYONE nearby, MAN or WOMAN! My grandmother said she was told that Marlene once did this to a young Greta Garbo and Garbor slapped her so hard, it sobered her instantly! Errol Flynn was also one of my great uncles tryst will tending bar in the silver years of Hollywood, but my great uncle said " He was a lazy lay, just laid their with this elephant trunk between his legs and expected for me to do all the work!" Jean Harlow,"She had a distinctive laugh you could hear across the room,as she got tipsy, she flirted, but NEVER "consummated her amorous intentions, she was a world class flirt". Mae West loved champagne (Dom Perignon with a splash of rose water), even though it was said she never drinked or smoked." She loved for "Boys to kiss boys,in front of her, she often said it made her "tingle in her nether regions". As far as Barrymore, my great uncle said he was what would be considered a "closet case, and did not mind who's lips were wrapped around him after a few martinis". Gloria Swanson was giggly when tipsy and loved to dance. She would clear an area and share current dance moves she was learning for a project with the crowd. My great uncle told my grandmother that " she would move like water, so beautiful, though she NEVER thought so". Jospehine Baker was " a good sport, loved to laugh, could drink and swear like a sailor, but was so beautiful, it would often take people by surprise at how down to earth she was. She was very self aware of her presence, and when she got tipsy, would hold conversations in french, which drove EVERYBODY nuts, as they wanted to understand whats he was saying!" She loved BOTH men and women, Women to kiss Men to "lay the brick", but was a complete joy. A young Joan Crawford could not hold her drink, and would often get tipsy after ONLY two glasses of champagne, but was a "bitchy drunk", she would start speaking negatively about female party-goers, about what they were wearing, their hair, their jewelery, etc. She was NOT invited to many of the intimate parties, and ALWAYS partied with the studio executives, as they were the only ones that found her entertaining. My grandmother was told it was during one of these parties, with a young Joan's habit for being bitchy after drinks, when she critized the WRONG starlet, a young Bette Davis, who got wind of her negative comments about her eyes and dress she was wearing. It was relayed that Bette Davis walked up to Joan's table, and threw her cocktail into the young Joan Crawford's face. She then compounded the insult by spreading rumors that Joan had a venereal disease, and had allready had two abortions at the age of 22. This spoiled the relationship that Joan had with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and the soon divorced. Joan hated Bette for the rest of her life, and their venomous hatred became legendary around Hollywood circles. and I too thought about writing a book,as the things my grandmother told me would surprise, even today's jaded tabloid audience, but decided not to. My great uncle always said, " These people trusted me because I was beautiful to the eye, but MOST importantly, they knew my mouth would stay shut". Most if not all of these stars have now since passed on,but don't ever think that they lived they lives you see on screen, or in written print, the truth was much more mesmerizing.

Yep, looks like a load of crap. Don't these au2000thors have anything better to do with their time? I thought an author was supposed to write the truth to the best of their ability, not to use gossip as fact. Is every Hollywood idol a homosexual? One customer asked this, and the answer is NO. Not EVERY Hollywood idol is homosexual or bisexual.
John Barrymore's life is much more interesting than any hack writer can make up.

Try Gene Fowler's "Good Night, Sweet Prince"(1944). Fowler was good friends with Barrymore and serves him up right without whitewashing him.
"The Life & Times of John Barrymore"(1977)by John Kobler is also a good read.
Margot Peters' "The House of Barrymore" is an overview of the entire family.
Also, James Kotsilibas-Davis' "Great Times, Good Times: The Odyssey of Maurice Barrymore" is a good read that gives very interesting and valuable info about American theater at the turn of the century.
All are available on eBay most of the time, or you can comb used book stores as they're all out of print. I hope this helps.
