Personally, I can't understand why he was never nominated for a Best Actor performance for SVENGALI. The scene with Carmel Myers deserves an oscar!!

Twentieth Century. Good though Gable was in It Happened One Night, it's an easy role for him, coasting along on charm alone. Barrymore manages to gain sympathy for an utterly self-obsessed control freak character, and he's funnier than Gable into the bargain.

I would normally agree with 20th Century award- but I must say that Gable definately deserved it that year for It Happened One Night. Incredible movie and I think one of the best (If not the best) Gable performances ever. I really enjoyed Barrymore in 20th Cetury, Dinner at Eight and Grand Hotel best.

Night Flight I haven't watched for a while but don't remember any specific part that I would say that's worthy of an oscar! Some film critics do consider that COUNSELLOR AT LAW is Jack's finest acting. I am not one of them though!
actually, I suppose its very hard to choose just ONE specific film Jack was great in and deserved an oscar because he was actually GREAT in MOST of his films. I watched MIDNIGHT again recently and although he's not the major star, his part in the film is better than Claudette Colberts! "Da.da!"

I would agree with Twentieth Century 100% (along side "Bringing Up Baby" as my favorite all time screwball comedy) and also found his Mercutio, well, confusing and not some of his best.
I would also nominate his "Counsellor at Law" performance.
When he goes for that window there isn't a heart in the theatre doesn't jump.
I've heard raves about his "Night Flight" performance but have never had the chance to see it.

Fredric March did derserve it, he was brilliant. So if I had to pick one I'd say "Dinner At Eight". When he finds out that he is washed up was heartbreaking.

Romeo and Juliet ???? Can't see that one myself for an oscar nomination but anyway others I would consider if they had given out oscars during the early twenties would have to be DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, purely for the transformation scene and TWENTIETH CENTURY. Classic Ham!!!
Grand Hotel and Dinner at Eight Jack was fantastic in both. Actually, Grand Hotel was the very first film that introduced me to the greatest man in my life. He certainly looks at his best (but not as handsome as he was in TEMPEST)in this film. But with all the other stars in GH and D@8 the academy probably didn't want to upset all the others by picking one or two. Besides, Fredric March deservedly got his oscar for his version of Jekyll and Hyde that year!

What about "Dinner At Eight" he was so effective as the washed up star. It's sad when you realise that he would soon be playing the part in real life as well. "A Bill Of Divorcement", "Grand Hotel" and "Romeo And Juliet" are others that I would consider.
