I really thought his performance in Counsellor at Law was really outstanding, not his usual style a little more natural than usual and I also liked his performance in Bill of Divorcement. The film/performance of Svengali was theatrical Barrymore and that itself was a great experience. I find the scene when he's standing in front of the window, the camera moves from wide shot then closeup to his eyes as it pulls back quickly out the windowamazing seamless for the era.
Also, I really liked his small but commanding role in Marie Antoinette. Even though you can see he's reading his lines especially in the opening scene, I love his read and his delivery.

John Barrymore is absolutely brilliant in A BILL OF DIVORCEMENT [1932]. He is moody and heartbreaking. He should have been nominated for an Oscar.

"Dinner at Eight" for me. "Svengali" is close. He really had a great death scene in that. Weird to say I know but I always thought it was much more realistic than you find in movies then & now.

I second DINNER AT EIGHT, his performance was brilliant and heartbreaking. I'll add GRAND HOTEL to the list.

I agree, "Counsellor at Law" was wonderful.
I would add "Dinner at Eight" and "Twentieth Century".
