Richard Beymer is smart. When he finishes "Celebration," he's giving up his house here, selling his car, and hopping to New York to study acting for three weeks before starting "A Promise at Dawn," with Ingrid Bergman. "Playing opposite Bergman is a wonderful opportunity, and I intend to be prepared," Dick said. When they start filming in England, he'll be across the channel from Sharon Tate, daughter of an army officer he dated while doing "The Longest Day." As far as his romance with the French actress, Dany Saval, Beymer says it's washed, scrubbed, and clean. "She wasn't about to leave Parisand my career is here."

Wow, interesting little tid-bit!
If he had done "The Haunting", I think his Hollywood career would've continued to be propelled forward. Because although some people have opinions on his 'Tony' (I personally feel he was great!), he was a very talented actor with a unique charisma and screen presence. But a few movies were beneath his talents. "Celebration" eventually became 1963's "The Stripper" co-starring Joanne Woodward which was a flop. Should've done "The Haunting"!
Another interesting trivia bit was this: "In 1961, Natalie Wood was announced for this film (then called Celebration), as a re-teaming with her West Side Story co-star Richard Beymer. Presumably, she would played a beefed up version of supporting role that eventually went to Carol Lynley."
http://www.imdb.com/board/10057537/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv
I remember reading that there were rumours of a reteaming of Wood and Beymer, but couldn't remember the title of the film. This would've beeninteresting. The irony of it is that I think they had great chemistry in WSS but Wood reportedly couldn't stand Beymer. There was never any particular reason either, which I think was slightly unfair. Perhaps that's why she refused to star in it and the part went to Carol Lynley.

. . . . When Dick Beymar returns from Paris where he's been making "The Longest Day," he'll be met by Bob Wise, who wants to borrow him from Twentieth Century-Fox for the romantic lead in "The Haunting," taken from "The Haunting of Hillhouse," by Shirley Jackson. The professor part has already been given to Peter Ustinov. There's a little problem here with Beymer. Jerry Wald also wants him for "Celebration."

Cool news article! I've never heard of him doing a film with Ingrid BergmanI guess it never happened. Too bad. That would've been delightful to see! Bergman was a fantastic actress and in spite of what the critics' view of Beymer's acting was, I always thought he was a talented actor who could have gone further with more experience.
I was bored and a little interested in what this project was about and surprise, surprise! I actually found info about it. It was canceled for Bergman and Beymer, but apparently was done in 1971 by a French director, with the actress Melina Mercouri:
It was based on a book, a 1960 memoir, written by Romain Gary.
