So a "celebration" of 4 decades of British music at the opening ceremonies doesn't include ANY Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Def Leppard? WTF? So I guess British Heavy Metal never happened?
Almost all of these bands are not just British, but from right IN London! Danny Boyle should be ashamed of himself!

Well, the artists during "the celebration" didn't have to perform. They were just playing the songs while the dancers were doing their thing on stage.

Jimmy Page did play Whole lotta Love at the Bejing handover ceremony. Page aside it was a poor debacle.

Zep would have been cool but do you remember what happened when Ozzy performed for the Queen?
Def Leppard? There's a band who are bigger in the US than the UK.
Also Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin(not Jimmy Paige )and Judas Priest are all from the Midlands while Def Leppard are from Sheffield.

there was a daley thompson lucozade ad in the 80s that had iron maiden's phantom of the opera as the soundtrack. would have been great to have referenced that

Black Sabbath, Def Leppard and Judas Priest are all from the Midlands. But I agree regardless: some heavy metal was needed. Boyle was clearly just putting his favourite bands into the mix though, and he obviously doesn't like to head-bang.
