I own all of John Cazale's films. I watched The Deer Hunter (78) on Blu Ray the other night. There is a scene in the half hour mark after Mr. Cazale and his friends leave the bar, the camera focuses on John as he looks up in the sky as the sun is shining. You can't help but feel horrible, because everybody knows that Mr. Cazale was terminally ill during the production of the film. You also can't help but wonder what Mr. Cazale was thinking at that time knowing thb68at he had a very limited amount of time left. My question is, does anybody know how Mr. Cazale was diagnosed with cancer? How long did he have it? Wikipedia mentioned that he had bone cancer and lung cancer. I don't trust that site. I admire and have a ton of respect or Mr. Cazale, because instead of enjoying whatever time he might have had left, he chose to continue making films right up until the end with the legendary masterpiece The Deer Hunter. If Mr. Cazale didn't have cancer, could you imagine what kind of career he could have established in the 80's, 90's, 00's and maybe today? Thanks to all for replying. I know it isn't any of my business to know about somebody's personal life, but Mr. Cazale had established himself 5 of the best films of all time. It's awful that he passed away at just 42 years old and this year marks 35 years since his passing. RIP Mr. Cazale.

Meryl was his fiancee. She has great taste in real life leading men. They would have been wonderful together in a good production as husband and wife.

I just watched it. Really nice tribute to Cazale. They got a lot of the elite actors from the 70s. Pacino, Streep, DeNiro.

There is a wonderful HBO documentary about John Cazale called, " I Knew it Was You: John Cazale." It gives plenty of info about John's life and career and includes many interviews by actors who either knew John or just respected his work.
The whole film is available in YouTube.
I would highly recommend the film for anyone who admired John's work.
If he had lived, I easily could have seen him being cast in The Sopranos.
He would have been great as Tony's uncle.

Hello! I've been interested in John Cazale's biography and filmograp16d0hy for quite some time and I think I can help.
From what I know, he must have been diagnosed around May 1977.
He started previews for his Broadway production "Agamemnon" in April 1977 not long before he was diagnosed and had to be replaced.
He suffered from lung cancer (confirmed by his brother Steve in the documentary - ,,I Knew It Was You. Rediscovering John Cazale"). Then the cancer metastasized to his bones He sadly passed away about 10 months later on March 12th 1978. If you have any more questions, please ask, maybe I can be of some help.
