True-I just saw Cazale in DOG DAY AFTERNOON, which is a straight-up genuine classic in itself. That's actually an overused term, but honestly, this picture earned that distinction because it's so realistic, and the characters/situations come off as so real themselvesthere seemed always nothing fake about the filmalmost like a documentary.. I would even say this is one of the best performances I've seen Pacino give in an old-school filmyes, he is THAT good in it, in one of his best films, ever.
But about Cazale's performanceif it wasn't for his odd, unique, distinctive look (I liked that long dark hair) his role could have easily been looked over, seeing as it wasn't a flashy or particularly demanding roleon the surface,at least. But Cazale, even though he didn't have a lot of line, still managed to convey a tenseness/tension wrapped up/coming from within his character,Saleven though he looked calm on the outside, you still had the sense of this nervous intensity being held at bay, which looked as if it/Sal was going to boil over/pop off at ANY moment, but never does. Very intriguing, and worth watchingwhich is why I didn't like what happened with Sal near the end (no spoilers here). Plus I like big-eyed-dark-haired actors, too, so his odd looks only made the character more intriguing and had me wondering what the hell he was gonna do next. Really enjoyed DDA, and Cazale's unusual, dark, brooding presence was a part of its intrigue/it just added to the film as a whole.

Agreed. Cazale was indeed a superb actor. I thought he was especially great in "Dog Day Afternoon."
1,000 mini-bios and I feel like I'm just getting started
