When you look up "wooden" in the dictionary, there is a picture of Lois Chiles. My goodness, she almost ruined a decent Bond movie, Moonraker, single-handedly. Every single line was delivered in a monotime. No emotion, no modulation. She didn't have the slightest concept of the acting craft. Terrible!

Statement is not entirely without merit but not entirely true either.
Chiles may not have been Meryl Streep but like many actors, if and when she was in movie with a decent director, she could more than hold her own. An example is "Broadcast News". The director, James L. Brook, could work wonders with actors and he brought out a sly, comic ability in Chiles that was surprisingly strong. Her performance in "Death on the Nile" is pretty bad because the director, John Guillermin, was more of an action director, kind of the Michael Bay of the 70s.
There are actors who rise above bad direction but many others like Chiles who needed the guidance of a sure footed director. I wouldn't just write her off.

Her ability is so lacking, its not surprising her background is in modeling. Once she is required to go beyond wearing clothes and smiling, she's outside the area of her expertise.
She's absolutely terrible in Moonraker. The movie flails every scene she is in. Apparently the director cast her because he was sitting next to her in the airplane. She is why you go through a CASTING DIRECTOR when casting parts.

She's a very bland actress but sometimes this lack of emotion or depth fit the characters she played, particularly the rich, beautiful and shallow women in
The Way We Were
and
Death on the Nile
, where she held her own against stalwarts like Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury and Maggie Smith. I don't think a Bette Davis or Katharine Hepburn could have been as effective in those roles.
Actually, Hepburn's roles (
The Philadephia Story
,
Bringing Up Baby
)early in her career were similar to what Chiles did. I'm not saying Chiles is a better actress than Hepburn but she'd naturally fit in to a part like Tracy Lords.

She was a bit stiff in Moonraker, but you have to remember that many (if not most) Bond girls are not known for their acting skills. She wasn't an actresses really, just a pretty face put in front of the camera. She's beautiful but no worse than Halle Berry or numerous other Bond girls.
Gotta love that name Dr. Goodhead!

I think you need to blame the director more than Lois, who surely did as she was told. But that director was in charge of a movie that had Jaws acting like Wiley E. Coyote and that ridiculous gondola sequence complete with double-taking pigeon. So why think he's competent at directing people? I imagine the idea was that the action on screen was so big, the actors should be more calm to reflect cool. It didn't work, but I don't blame Lois Chiles. It's not like that was her decision.

Sadly I have to agree. I find her the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Ever. But recently I decided to watch one of her films in English (I'm spanish and here we always watch movies dubbed into Spanish), and without the amazing acting of the Spanish voice actress, I discovered that actually Lois Chiles is a terrible actress. Couldn't believe the monotone and unnatural way she delivered her lines, very resembling of when children make school plays.
But then again, she illuminated the screen with her presence, that's undeniable.

She wasn't very good as an actress but she never had very good parts either. She was better on the small screen as Holly Harwood on Dallas where maybe she had some time to grow into the role. She should have done more comedy, she was very funny in Broadcast News as Jennifer the newscaster who gets shipped off to Alaska because Holly Hunter was jealous. She could have done more comedy, kind of like Priscilla Presley who wanted to be a dramatic actress - without much success -until Naked Gun showed how funny she could be as the 'straight man' in comedy. Lois might have fared better down that road. But, at the very least, she was always tall, elegant, beautiful window dressing.

Another who has to agree. While pretty, her career was definitely in modeling where she was photographed and not in acting, where she had to speak and show emotion and depth of character. It's sad, but that's not to say she didn't score some level of success in films, and has gone on to do a great deal of fundraising for several charities.

Well, from what I saw in The Great Gatsby, I have to disagree. I'm sure I recognise the name so I came here to see what she had been in and was surprised at how her career seems to have tailed off.
I thought she stole the show from Mia Farrow (who seemed to be playing a victim of brain damage) in Gatsby. A very cool, understated performance, out of step with a typically over the top Seventies blockbuster. She was extremely beautiful in it too.
Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!
