I didn't care for her at first either, even though I wanted to. When I saw NOTES ON A SCANDAL, for example, I came away thinking it was the movie I was liking and not really her. But, since then, she's slowly but surely grown on me, and now I find myself on a bit of a Judi kick!
It helps too, if you develop a respect for her outside her film-roles. That's what I did, after seeing her in interviews, noticing how amiable and jolly she could be. I also love the fact that she's managed to maintain a queen-like grace and air of dignity over the years, without scandal. Yup, I think it's safe to say she's won me over now, really.

I like her well enough. But, why is it when someone gives an opinion about an actor, such as how they see them, others have to be so insulting, and personal with their opinions, if they don't agree with what the OP had said. It's their opinion, others are allowed to disagree, why do they have to overreact? The OP didn't bad-mouth anybody's mother (only Finty Williams, Dench's daughter).

I love Judi Dench. And even though I'm a Denchhead I hate As Time Goes By. If I only new Judi Dench from As Time Goes By I wouldn't be impressed by her acting either.

She was amazing in Chocolat, she's both hot and cold there, with amazing depth, go to hell.

Don't worry. This is what happens when someone with a fondness for "Beavis and Butthead" and the like stumbles through watching something with real acting. Not everyone has educated tastes. If it weren't for dullards like you, the rest of us wouldn't have anyone to laugh at.
If you can actually watch "As Time Goes By" and say there is no emotion in it, there's no help for you. You're oblivious to truth.

I felt the same way until I saw her in Skyfall. She was pefect to me this time, with out giving too much away I'll just say she had a vulnerable look in her eyes, which made me feel more for her character.
I should say I havn't seen her in many other5b4 roles other than M. This is her greatest performance as M, in my mind.

I really don't follow Old British actresses but I have seen the Dame in plenty of costume dramas and contemporary films and I have to say she does a much better job with her roles than many of her younger counterparts.
I don't know what you mean by emotionless because I think she's rather snippy and good at playing someone who wants to get under your skin. If that's not the opposite of emotionless then I don't know what is.

Dame Judi Dench is far from "horrid". She is one of the finest actresses today. Get a clue, and grow UP.
