did he ever go to school for directing??? I mean, when you look at his director's list with Bo, you can see that all those movies got critically panned and that they weren't well made:
Ghosts Can't Do it
(1989)
Bolero
(1984)
Tarzan, The Ape Man
(1981)
Fantasies
(1981)
I admit I did enjoy
Ghosts Can't Do It
when I caught it late one night on the movie channel many years ago.

The more I study it, the greater the puzzle becomes.
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad

I'd never say they were well made in any traditional sense, but they were for the most part well photographed and had a certain character. Their erotic nature meant they would be instant critic's-bait no matter how they turned out, and his delight in his wife's beauty was more meat for shark-infested waters.
If you are interested and can get your hands on a copy, THE CONFESSIONS OF TOM HARRIS, on which he shares director credit with David Nelson, is a compelling and coherent work that rewards repeat viewing. Helped, no doubt, by the fact that it was not also written by Derek, whose sensibility is not to everyone's taste. The photography by Derek though is striking and hints at what he could have accomplished had he been able to better work with others.
