James Garner said he never wanted to be in the top 10 box office attractions. He did appear in the top 25 most popular stars a few times. Here is his ranking:
1963: 16
1964: 16
1965: 18
1969: 25
1971: 17

I got the information from the following. James Garner is featured in the years I gave where he is among the top 25 most popular stars. He was never in the top 10. Not once.
And Cheeky, yes, Sally Field said he was the best kisser!

Not sure where you got that ranking, but he was definitely one of the top 10 box office attractions in the '60s and on TV in the '70s. He was in so many films then,

I don't think that changes or hurts at all the fact that he was a Great Actor.

Sally Field credits him as being the best kisser she's ever had

In 1968 Variety magazine published a list of ten stars it considered overpriced. The stars charged at least $250,000 a film and had at least four flops in a row recently.
James Garner appears on the list of ten performers that year.

He was definitely a Great Actor and I think also definitely deserving of being called 1 of the Top 25 Most Popular Stars.
When it comes to All of the Movies that he did, I think that My own Number 1 Favorite is "
THE GREAT ESCAPE
