I know that James Garner was most successful in television, but he should get a Lifetime Achievement Oscar I think he has a fine body of work in movies and he has shown himself to be a professional, versatile, gifted actor for more than 50 years. I'm kind of surprised that he has only one acting nomination to his credit (for Murphy's Romance, a good film but not his best). SAG gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award several years back and I think his credentials are strong enough to be recognized by the Acadamy. I don't know when they decide on these awards or if they have announced who will get it next year. I just hope they consider Mr. Garner at some time.

Is rrb really saying that Garner was an inferior actor to Barbara Stanwick? I beg to differ.
The Oscars are generally awarded to those actors who are best at stealing scenes, not to dedicated ensemble actors who are more interested in being a part of a great film than in advancing their own careers. The fact that Garner didn't get an Oscar is the Academy insulting itself, and no reflection on Garner. The Academy realized it's own folly in time to finally award Henry Fonda for his work in "On Golden Pond", but in Garner's case it remained asleep at the switch.
Either that or they didn't like him because he was part Cherokee. I'm not sure which.

Yes, when you're fond of an actor, his performances do resonate. Doesn't make him an artist of such distinction that he deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award.
"flashy characterstend to win awards."
Actually, it's the actors who win the awards, not the characters.
And how are Garner's characters less "flashy" than those of award-winning actors?

well, there are lots who disagree. . . Mr. Garner has created a number of characters who still resonate with us. His characters feel real. . . though they may not be the flashy characters that tend to win awards.

Sorry, OP, but there's a difference btn being beloved and being a star whose talent and body of work are unique and extraordinary, which is what the Lifetime Achievement Oscar recognizes. Mr. Garner is in the former category. LAO recipients like Barbara Stanwyck and Peter O'Toole are in the latter. I'm as fond of Mr. Garner as anyone else, but he's not in the caliber of the other actors cited.

I am thrilled to see all the support for Jim Garner getting a Lifetime Achievement Oscar. Amazingly, a petition has been started just yesterday. You can find the link at The Official James Garner Fan Page. I would post it here myself if I knew how. Please sign the petition if you feel as strongly as I do.
Thank you.

I think the fact that they don't give posthumous honorary Oscars is a bad policy. There are so many fine actors that never received the recognition that an Oscar brings. The names that come to mind..along with James Garner, one big name that comes to mind is Errol Flynn. Also Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Stewart Granger, Tony Curtis, Randolph Scott, William Powell, Buster Keaton..Thankfully Charlie Chaplin FINALLY got recognized before he passed on. That is a policy which really needs to change!

couldn't agree with you more the motion picture academy should do it but they may wait and do it posthumustly
The academy does not award honorary Oscars posthumously. Of course, if the recipient should die before the ceremony, the award would still be given (Douglas Fairbanks, Edward G. Robinson, Audrey Hepburn etc.).
I don't think I want to go to the pictures. Oh?Why not? I've seen everything worth seeing.
