IMBD lists him at 6'0 but there is no way he is any more than 5'9 or 5'9 1/2. There is no way he was almost half a foot taller than Alan Ladd in Shame. I know they had ways to make Ladd seem taller lifts in his boots whatever but Heflin would have towered over him and he didn't.
It matters to be from the stand point that this actor is the ultimate everyman. He's not the tall hunky Randolph Scott type.
And that's what i like about him. I also like Randolph Scott but you get my point.

Alan Ladd was notoriously short. The studio loved pairing him with Veronica Lake because she was one of the few actresses shorter than him.

No matter how tall physically
He was an excellent actor and underrated in my opinion

I thought he was 6'0. In "Johnny Eager" he appears to be tall and slender and about an inch taller than Robert Taylor, who usually is reported to be 5'11".
As for the comparison with Alan Ladd, the movie was "Shane," not "Shame." I thought Heflin did tower over Alan Ladd, regardless of which size lifts Ladd was wearing in the various scenes. No, he did not tower over Ladd like Jack Plance did; I'll give you that.
I don't get your point, boy.
